Ruth Freidberg

May 16, 1935 — September 5, 2019

North Austin Location

Our beloved Ruth Rhoden Freidberg of Cedar Park, Texas, passed quietly from this life on September 5th with family members by her side. She succumbed in the final stages of dementia having lived 84 years.

Ruth was raised in Amarillo, Texas, where she proudly graduated from Amarillo High School, was involved with Cal Farley’s Boy’s Ranch, worked at the movie theatre and volunteered with the USO. Ruth met her husband of 63 years through the USO. She and Joseph eloped to Tucumcari, New Mexico on June 2nd 1956. They considered themselves roadrunners and since that is the NM state bird, Ruth began a lifelong collection of roadrunners in every medium.

During their 37 years in Irving, Texas, Ruth was involved in Cub Scouts as a den mother, a bowling league at Golden Triangle Bowl, the Republican Women’s Club, T.O.P.S. and the Irving Jewish Fellowship. In 1999, after retiring, Joe and Ruth relocated to Cedar Park to fulfill their desires of being full-time grandparents and having enough space to entertain travelling friends and family. There they were involved with Senior Circle and Congregation Shir-Ami and enjoyed lots of family time, both in the Austin area and at their son’s and daughter-in-law’s ranch house. Ruth and Joe were able to travel the world together, sometimes to see their daughter, Marci perform.

As a lifelong Sandie, Ruth will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas, on Saturday, September 14th at 2 pm. She loved movies, theatre and music and being surrounded by family and friends always brought her immense joy. Therefore, All are invited to informally gather graveside. Bring stories, pictures and music.

Ruth is survived by her beloved baby sister, Peggy; her husband of 63 years, Joseph; her son, David and his wife, Janet; her daughter, Marci; and her grandsons, Michael, Nicholas, and Ryan and his wife, Vanessa; as well as many nieces and nephews.

If you’d like to make a donation in her name, please do so to “Amarillo High School” and memo: Ruth Rhoden Freidberg Fine Arts Fund. Mail to AHS, 4225 Danbury Street, Amarillo Texas 79109.
