Obituary

Patsy Lou (Johnson) Smith

1940 - 2020

Pat Smith passed away peacefully in her home in Driftwood, TX on June 24, 2020 surrounded by family members after a long and courageous battle. Pat was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Pat was born on February 19, 1940 in Austin, TX to Betty Jo (Jimmerson) Johnson and Benjamin Franklin Johnson. After graduation from William B. Travis High School, Pat worked in the Sears catalog department and as a researcher for the IRS.

Pat was the ultimate matriarch and her life revolved around her family; the family to which she was born, the family into which she married, and the large family she raised and guided into the wonderful beings they have become. She loved her family to pieces and bragged about her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids any chance she could. Pat loved spending time with her family and it brought her so much joy when the kids or great-grandkids would come over for a visit. She always had a story to share and was a great listener; you could talk around the kitchen table for hours. Visitors never left the house hungry or unhappy after a visit with Pat. She loved the show Country’s Family Reunion and watched it every Friday night. She had a great love for music and would sing right along. Her love for the Lord was apparent to all who met her. Pat brought joy to all those around her and lit up a room with her million dollar smile.

Pat had a love for nature and for wildlife. She loved watching the birds while drinking her cup of hot tea every morning. They had pot-belly pigs, chickens, sheep, peacocks, guineas, even an axis deer named Bucky - all sorts of animals on those few acres. She had a green thumb too; she grew some of the most gorgeous rose bushes and knew just how to nurture and care for the most delicate orchids. Pat loved to read and play cards and dominoes. She always spoke her mind and encouraged those around her to do the same and find their voice.

Pat is preceded in death by her two son-in-laws: Billy Peters and Clay Cox. She is also joining her parents and siblings in heaven: Sam, Billy “Bud”, Sally, Paul and Pauline Johnson.

Pat is survived by John Smith, her husband of 63 loving years and their four children: Pam Peters, Paula Bryant and husband Harvey, Dennis Smith and wife Kerry, and Penny Houston and husband David. Pat has eight grandchildren: Marta Black, Cari Peters, Ami Fromme, Adam Cox, CJ Sharp, Winston Smith, Clint Smith, and Alex Houston. Pat also has 20 glorious great-grandchildren (plus one on the way). She is also survived by her siblings: Clara Kinney, June Collins, and Jimmy “Cotton” Johnson.

The family would like to thank Dr. Geyer and his medical team for providing excellent medical care over the last 15+ years. They also truly appreciate the hospice nurses for their compassion and care, especially Stacey.

In lieu of flowers, Pat requested donations to be made in her honor to Driftwood United Methodist Church and/or the Central Texas Food Bank
