Florene Brown

June 1, 1937 — October 6, 2020

North Austin Location

Florene Brown, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend entered eternal life on Tuesday, October 6th, 2020.

Florene was born on June 1, 1937 to Hence Black Sr. and Alma Zachary-Black.  Both parents preceded her in death.  She professed a belief in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Swenson Grove Baptist Church in Rice’s Crossings, Texas.  She was an avid church-goer and Sunday school attendee at Greater Swenson Grove (Austin, Texas) which sustained her throughout life. She often said, “Being in worship at Greater Swenson Grove fueled her for the entire week.”

She attended Manor and Taylor ISD.  On October 16, 1952, she was united in marriage to Morris Brown who preceded her in death.  To this union six children were born: Charles Brown Sr., Lester Brown Sr. (Cynthia Brown) of Manor, Stanley Brown (Charlene Brown), Phyllis Roberson of Austin, and Barbara Jones, Marilyn Brown who preceded her in death.

In 1968, Florene began working at Brackenridge Hospital in a job she cherished dearly in the dietary department until her retirement in 1993. In this role she had an opportunity to connect with many different people.  She was known for her culinary expertise, namely her sock-it-to-me cake, pineapple upside-down cake, and sweet potato pies.  Fulfilling special orders for family and friends brought her great joy and pleasure.

Florene had a sassy style supported by her love for shopping, topped off by her exquisite, long, and bright red nails.  She loved to drive to Killeen to maintain her signature look and spend time with family.  She also loved to drive to family reunions or gatherings where she could spend more time with family and friends.  Maintaining close relationships was important to her no matter how far the drive.

She was preceded in death by siblings Willie Black, Dorothy Brown, Lenora Carter, Arleane Towns, and Hence Black Jr.

On October 6, 2020, Florene Brown’s journey on earth ended and she went on to begin her new life with her Heavenly Father.  She leaves to cherish her memory, brother Herman Black Sr. of Pflugerville; children: Charles, Lester, Stanley (Charlene), and Phyllis; special daughter-in-law Cynthia; grandchildren: Narissa (Tyrus), Charles Jr (Dorothy), Lester Jr (Jodie), Morris, Candice (Adrian), Tamisha, Marcus, Dawnshea (Clarence), Terrance and Shyra; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
