Thomas Mcgee

February 14, 1926 — August 26, 2017

North Austin Location

Thomas (Tom) Christian McGee of Austin, Texas died on August 26, 2017 at the age of 91. Born February 14, 1926 to Joseph and Velma McGee of San Antonio, Texas, Tom was known for his devotion to God, country, friends and family.

Tom is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley Hatch McGee whom he met at Trinity University after serving in the U.S. Navy. After graduating from Austin Seminary, Tom and Shirley served Texas Presbyterian churches in Port Aransas (1952-1953), Harlingen (1953-1963), and Westlake Hills (1963-1967). His engaging sermons and encouraging manner won him many friends. Tom’s love of helping people motivated him to pursue a career in counseling at the University of Texas where he helped pioneer the telephone counseling program for U.T. Counseling Services. After completing his Masters of Psychology there, he began a long career as a beloved counselor at Southwest Texas State University in 1971.

Tom and Shirley invested their retirement years in their growing family and many friends at Covenant Presbyterian Church. He is survived by two children, Tommy (son) and Lisa McGee and Barry and Sherry (daughter) Travis. As their “Bapaw,” Tom was adored by six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. All will miss his corny jokes, words of wisdom and most of all, his unconditional love for all people.

A memorial service and reception will be held Thursday, August 31, 11:00 A.M. at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 3003 Northland. Donations in his honor may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church Capital Campaign Fund for the new Fellowship and Educational building.
