North Austin Location

Shirley Hatch McGee of Austin, Texas died on September 14, 2017 at the age of 88. Born February 21, 1929 to Monroe and Edna Hatch in New Rockford, North Dakota, she grew up in Rio Hondo, Texas surrounded by countless aunts, uncles and cousins. Shirley was known for her adventurous spirit, constant acts of service and her devotion to God, family and her many friends.

Shirley is recently preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Tom C. McGee as well as her siblings: LaVone Hatch Collier, Kenneth Hatch, Gerald Hatch, and Charles Hatch. Shirley graduated from Trinity University in 1949 where she met Tom and began a lifelong career as an educator. Shirley served Texas schools in Harlingen and Austin, where she was the longest standing employee of the AISD with 49 years of teaching, counseling and social work.

Tom and Shirley invested their retirement years in their growing family and many friends at Covenant Presbyterian Church. She served the Stephen's Ministry as a caregiver and brought flowers to anyone she thought needed them! She always had a word of encouragement or wisdom to everyone she met. Shirley is survived by two children, Tommy (son) and Lisa McGee and Barry and Sherry (daughter) Travis. As their "Granny" Shirley was adored by six grandchildren - Thomas and wife Emma, Tiffany and husband Chris, Timothy and wife Skyler, Tony and wife Shannon, Rebecca and husband Jason and Tara - and eight great grandchildren - Landon, Landry, Aidan, Collin, Haven, Cedar Jame, Winter and T.C. All of us will miss her beaming smile, acts of kindness, and sincere desire to help others.
