Richard Gamez, of Brownsville, Texas, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service, knowledge, and devotion to family.
Born in Brownsville to Carlos Gamez Jr., and Alicia Graciela Galván, Richard grew up with a strong sense of duty and loyalty that guided him throughout his life. He proudly served his country as a Ranger in the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) division of the Army during the Vietnam War, showing the courage and resilience that defined his character.
Following his military service, Richard dedicated himself to education and became a college professor of Texas History. His passion for the subject was evident in every lecture, where he shared not only facts and stories, but also a deep love for the heritage of his home state. Many of his students carried with them his lessons and his enthusiasm long after leaving his classroom.
Richard’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife Maryann Ryan-Gamez for 35 years. A dedicated father to Stacy Marie Nelson and the proud grandfather of Arden Nelson, who brought him immense joy. Later in life, Richard was reunited with his son, Adam Garcia Dowling, with whom he was grateful to share a bond in his final years. He also opened his heart to a former student, Catherine Ingles-Maldonado, whom he lovingly made a part of the family as a testament to his generous spirit and capacity for love.
He is survived by his six siblings, Margarita Shepherd, Leticia Gamez-Balderas, Carlos A. Gamez, MaryJane Martinez, Suzana Gamez Vasquez, and Eliseo Gamez. He was preceded in death by his wife Maryann, mother Graciela, father Carlos, and youngest sister Elizabeth Gamez-Nichols. His family will remember him for his loyalty, humor, and steady presence—a man who lived with quiet strength and whose love will remain with them always.
At this time, the family will hold services to honor Richard’s life at All Faith’s Funeral Home in Austin, Texas on September 25th, 2025 at 9:45am. Burial will be at 2pm at Central Texas Veteran’s State Cemetery in Killeen with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a veterans’ organization of your choice in Richard’s memory.
