Lucy Block

Lucy Jane Block was born April 28, 1918 in the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia the eldest of four children of Walter N. and Lucy Grace (Waggener) Moore. She was raised in Kansas City, Missouri, attending elementary and high school and Kansas City Teachers College where she graduated in 1939 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She taught school in Hermann, Missouri 1939-1941 and in Kansas City 1941-1943.

She married Nelson Conrad Block on November 29, 1942. During the years of his World War II service, 1943-1946, she taught school and had various positions at the bases where he was stationed. Following the war they moved to Chicago, Illinois and lived in the city and suburbs for 45 years until they moved to Austin, Texas in retirement in 1992.

The Blocks were blessed with a son, Stephen, and a daughter, Jean. Lucy Jane received her Master's Degree in Education from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois in 1955. After the younger child started to school Lucy Jane taught school in Barrington, Illinois for 22 years, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas. For all the years from age 14-80 she taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and adult Bible classes for she truly loved to teach. She was also active in Women's Missionary League and worked for Meals on Wheels, the Food Pantry, and the Homeless organization for McHenry County, Illinios.

She is survived by son, Stephen and his wife, Sandra; daughter, Deaconess Jean and her husband, Paul Warren; grandchildren, Sharon Fornea, Katherine Piersanti, Jonathan Block, Jacob Warren and Conrad Warren; and five great grandchildren; sister Ann Bates and her husband Arthur; sister-in-law Virginia Moore; two nieces and three nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and brothers Walter N. Moore, Jr. and Joseph Moore.

Interment will be in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery near Owensville, Missouri.
