John Byron Mack

November 21, 1961 — April 20, 2024

Lago Vista, TX

Longtime Lago Vista, TX resident and Texas A&M Alumni, John Byron Mack passed away on April 20, 2024.   Byron was born in San Antonio, TX to John Gustav Mack and Elizabeth Annette Mack on November 21, 1961.  Byron grew up playing football, from Pop Warner all the way to Churchill High School football as a defensive lineman. He graduated from Texas A&M School of Engineering as a mining engineer, class of 1985.

Byron met the love of his life, Darnell, while shopping at the neighborhood HEB in San Antonio in 1982.   Byron and Darnell Joy married on August 19, 1983.  Always moving from one adventure to the next, they enjoyed their careers, hobbies, travels, family, and most recently, running their own small business, together. Byron loved all things science, rocks, cooking, hunting, and Sci-Fi; he was always intrigued by the latest gadget—growing with the technological age from the Apple 2C and Laser Disks to the digital world today.

Above all of Byron’s achievements as a 25-year Mining Engineer for ALCOA and Luminant, his greatest achievement was raising his children:  Samantha Paige (25), Byron Zachary (23), and John Curtis (23). Byron could always be found sitting in the audience of all of his children’s events—supporting them and their school, Brentwood Christian School. Byron showed his love to his family in as many ways as he possibly could, whether it be poking fun to generate a smile or jumping to help with even the smallest of needs.

John Byron Mack was preceded in death by his parents John Gustav Mack and Elizabeth Annette Mack.  Byron leaves behind his wife of over 40 years, Darnell Joy; their children Samantha, Zachary, and Curtis; his brother, Randall Mack and wife Hilda; his sister, Candace and husband Michael Watts; and his sister, Ginger and husband Rudy Ramirez.
