Ernest Crayton Sr. was born to Stella and Claude Crayton Sr. on September 10, 1947, at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas.

Ernest’s educational journey began at Oak Springs Elementary School, continued through Kealing Junior High School, and culminated at L.C. Anderson High School. Following high school, Ernest received training at the Manpower Trade School and later worked at the Austin Independent School District Warehouse. He went on to build a long and honorable career with White Swan as a professional truck driver, retiring after more than thirty years of dedicated service.

Ernest’s Christian journey began at an early age under the spiritual guidance of his mother, Stella. Later in life, he attended several churches, including Unity Hill Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, where his brother, Rev. Arvy Crayton, served as pastor. Ernest frequently spoke of his faith in God and believed deeply in the power of prayer.

Ernest found great joy in fishing and camping, especially when surrounded by family. The outdoors was his sanctuary—a place of peace, reflection, and laughter. He had a playful spirit and a wonderful sense of humor, often teasing those he loved most. His jokes brought light to every room, and even his “serious” moments usually carried a smile. Ernest also enjoyed playing cards. Whether gathered around the kitchen table or playing during family gatherings, the games were always filled with friendly competition, lively conversation, laughter, and cherished memories.

Ernest departed this earthly life on August 24, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stella and Claude Crayton Sr.; sisters, Lena May Mercer and Violet Smith; brothers, Claude “Sugarman” Crayton Jr. and Bobby Ray Crayton; aunts, Mattie Elgin, Lena Elgin, and Rosie L. Reed; uncle, James Elgin; niece, Trina Knox; grandson, Champion Brinkley; and granddaughter, Nakia Crayton.

Ernest leaves to cherish his memory his three sisters, Mary Alice (Crayton) Burton of Austin, Texas, Clara Cobble of Austin, Texas, and Zora Walker of Las Vegas, Nevada; and one brother, Arvy (Alma) Crayton of Austin, Texas.

He also leaves his beloved children, Ernest (Annie) Crayton Jr. of Austin, Texas; Angela (Vincent) Spencer of Lansing, Michigan; Ricky (Porshia) Wilkins Sr. of Austin, Texas; Lakisha (Chris) Shaw of Manor, Texas; Cherie Harrell of Pflugerville, Texas; and Breane (Karl) Harrison of Pflugerville, Texas; sixteen grandchildren, with one grandchild on the way; nineteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Ernest also leaves to cherish his memory his special friends, Mack Estelle, Joe Gilbert, Otho Green, and Charlie Sneed, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Ernest will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his faith in God, his love for family, his playful sense of humor, and the countless memories he created with those he loved. His presence will be deeply missed, but the love and laughter he shared will remain in the hearts of his family forever.
