Dorothy Cross

July 19, 1928 — May 12, 2012

North Austin Location

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Dorothy Nell Cross passed away in the early morning hours of May 12, 2012, at the age of 83.
Born in Sweetwater, Texas on July 19, 1928, she was the youngest of four children of Robert and Florence Smith. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1945 and moved to Dallas to begin a 37-year career with Southwestern Bell. Her marriage to James Adams brought about the birth of her beloved son Gary. Her subsequent marriage to Jim Cross in 1961 lasted 44 years, until his death in 2005.
Dorothy lived in Dallas most of her adult life, but she and Jim followed his AT&T career moves to Sweetwater in 1965 and Mineral Wells in 1968. They moved back to Dallas in 1974, where they had a large circle of friends. She was a wonderful cook and loved to see people enjoying her cooking.
After her husband Jim passed away in 2005, she moved from Dallas to Austin to be close to her son's family, including hergrandchildren Annie and Holly, of whom she was so proud. She lived at The Continental retirement community in Austin for 5 years and developed several close friendships there.
She is survived by her son, James Gary Adams, daughter-in-law Carol Adams, granddaughters Annie Ryan Adams and Holly Lauren Adams, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was especially close to nieces Suzanne Sparks, Carol Sasin, and Sandra Smith. She is predeceased by her parents Robert and Florence Smith, her husband James L Cross, Brother Herman Smith, sister Ruby Finley, sister Frances Sparks, and niece Carol Sasin.
Interment of ashes is planned for a later date at Lowell-Tims Memorial Park in Altus, OK, in the Cross family plot. In accordance with her wishes, no services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association http://www.lung.org/or the charity of your choice. Visit www.allfaithsonline.com for additional information.
