Donald Kendall James
Newton
May 2, 1991 – April 12, 2026
Donald Kendall James Newton, affectionately known as James, passed away on April 12, 2026, in his hometown of Austin, Texas. Born on May 2, 1991, James lived a life marked by boundless creativity, unwavering resilience, and a deep commitment to his family and music.
From the very beginning, James' passion for music was evident. Growing up in Austin, Texas, he first found his voice singing alongside his younger brother Invictus in his grandparents’ living room. His earliest public performance was as the lead for the youth choir of St. James Baptist Church in Austin, a place where the seeds of his lifelong devotion to music were sown. Drawing inspiration from legendary artists such as Michael Jackson and Eddie Kendricks, and contemporary voices like The Dream and Chris Brown, James shaped his own unique style and sound. More than a performer, he was a creator—whether writing songs, producing music, or playing various instruments—he carried his love of music with him wherever he went, often producing on his phone, carrying his microphone and speaker.
James was also a dedicated student, beginning his academic journey as a proud Cook Crocodile, where he maintained an AB Honor Roll every year. His time at Westview Middle School and Connally High School were formative, allowing him to sharpen his songwriting skills and strengthen his love for music.
Beyond his artistic talents, James was described by those who knew him as an entertainer, inspirational, and vibrant individual. A believer in Christ from a young age, he bore an infectious smile that brightened any room. Known for his steadfast kindness, James never gave up on anyone and was a source of support even during his own struggles. He was funny, loving, and outspoken—with a protective spirit and a profound dedication to family. Despite battling many challenges, James carried within him a gentle strength, a survivor’s heart, and a spirit that inspired many.
He also broadened his talents beyond music. His modeling endeavors with the John CasaBlancas Center in Carrollton, Texas propelled him into the world of acting, an ambition fueled by the example set by his older cousin Adoria, who blazed her own path in the same field.
Among the proudest moments in James’ life was the birth of his daughter, Aunisti Maryah Newton, who remained the driving force behind all his endeavors. His love for Aunisti never wavered, even when life's demands kept them apart; he persistently sought to express his affection and make up for lost time.
James’ love for family was profound. He is survived by his mother, Jameca Newton-Mitchell, and father, Sam Harris; his brothers, Dontell Invictus-Ray Mitchell and Richard Harris; sisters Rayven Harris, Tsianina Harris, Ja’cia Mitchell, and Joy Mitchell; and his beloved daughter, Aunisti Maryah Newton. These cherished family members, alongside countless friends and admirers, hold the memory of a man whose heart was as large as his talents.
James was preceded in death by his grandmother Otelia Hutchinson, affectionately known as Ma Dear; his aunt Patricia Ann Hutchinson, known as Aunt Pat; his uncle Keith Brian Newton, lovingly called Uncle Boo; Kortez Henderson, known fondly as “KT”; as well as his Triplet younger cousins and many others who now await his arrival at the crossroads.
The community will come together in honor of James with a Farewell Balloon release on Saturday, April 9th, at Walnut Creek Metro Park near the basketball court located at 12138 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas 78753. Following his burial services, a repass will be held, with invitations coordinated through his brother Invictus for those wishing to attend.
Donald Kendall James Newton’s journey—a vibrant tapestry of music, family, faith, and unyielding spirit—is a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who loved him. The world lost a remarkable talent and a compassionate soul, but James’ song will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know him.
