Donald Maccabe

Donald Robert Maccabe died at Christopher House Hospice on July 26, 2018 surrounded by family members who loved him.  He was the son of Robert Searles Maccabe and Mary Frances Ashley of San Antonio.  Don married Connie Mae Cotten on April 22, 1978 in Gainesville, Texas.

He is survived by his wife, son Robert and daughter-in-law Aren, and grandchildren Chloe and Charley.  Don is also survived by his brother David MacCabe and wife Nancy, sister B.J. (Beni) Hemmeline and husband Steve, in-laws Cynthia and Bill DeBorde, Mike and Pam Cotten, Debbie and Jack Frost, and several nieces and nephews.  The world around us is less bright with Don's departure.  His pleasant demeanor, love of people, and large inventory of jokes made for many happy days for all who knew and loved him.

Don dedicated over 25 years' service to Texas citizens at the Texas Commission for the Blind, the Industrial Accident Board, and Travis State School.  As a placement specialist and a human resource manager, Don helped many clients and employees on their life journey and for many years also served as a volunteer coach for youth baseball teams.  After retirement, he could be found on many baseball bus tours, at his favorite fishing spots, attending Longhorn sporting events, barbecuing whatever was available, and enjoying his family and friends and especially his beloved grandkids.  For several years he enjoyed working part-time for the Round Rock Express and the Cedar Park Center.

The family is especially grateful to the caring and professional staff members of Hospice Austin especially nurses Patricia Smith and Blanche Pichon-Benford.  Don's Memorial will be held on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 11:00 AM at All Faiths Funeral Services, 8507 North Interstate Highway-35 Frontage Road.  In lieu of flowers those wanting to honor Don may wish to send contributions to Hospice Austin or your favorite charity.
