Marshall McDade Sr.

September 8, 1927 ~ December 18, 2019 (age 92)

Marshall McDade was born September 8, 1927 in Frost, Texas to Arlee Banks and Albert (Buck) McDade.    He confessed Christ at an early age at St. Matthews Church, in the Colored Edition in Pflugerville under the pastorage of Rev. J. B. Smith.  He attended schools in Pflugerville, Texas through middle-school level, then worked to help support his family.  After holding various jobs, he joined the U. S. Army where he served during the Korean War.  He received a medical discharge from the U. S Army after recovering from tuberculosis.  Marshall went to night school to obtain his GED and graduated from People’s Business College.

On August 20, 1954, he married Pauline Robinson in Pflugerville, TX. Upon moving to Austin, they joined St. Stephen's Baptist Church in 1956 under Rev. B.F. Parmer. Marshall was ordained as a deacon the same year. He remained a lifelong member of St. Stephen’s and served in many capacities over the years:  Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, and Chair of Deacons. He also participated in Brotherhood where he led an annual Brotherhood program that provided a preaching opportunity for young ministers.  Others fondly remember him for leading devotion, teaching young deacons and caring deeply for the members and Pastors of St. Stephens.  He loved and supported his Pastors and formed friendships with Pastors and ministers all over the city.  He frequently led his favorite hymns during devotion, “Lord I Want to Be a Christian In My Heart,” “Get Right Church and Let’s Go Home,” and “I Love the Lord He Heard My Cry.”

Marshall and Pauline were married for 64 years and 51 weeks.  They raised three sons.  Together, they also cared for elderly family members and provided support and opened their home to family members young and old.  Before having children of their own, they served as surrogate parents to a group of nieces and nephews (the first kids) who love and remember the caring support that they received from the young couple.  Marshall loved helping Pauline taking care of the grandkids, great nieces and nephews, and the children of young families that they were able to support.  He became Poppa Daddy to all.

After 26 years Marshall retired from the United States Postal Service.  In his spare time, he loved to fish and over the years earned extra income from the fresh vegetables grown from his garden in Pflugerville, the domesticated rabbits he raised, and the eight-track tapes he sold.  During these years he was a member of the Lyons Jr. Lodge 290, Webb Smith Consistency 247, 32nd Degree Masonary, Moussa Temple #906, San Antonio, Texas and Charter Member of Cheops Temple No. 200 Austin, Texas.  After a brief stint working for the State of Texas and having open-heart surgery in 1991, he began sewing homemade patchwork quilts.  He and Pauline sold many of those quilts; however, many of them continue to keep his sons, grandchildren, family and friends warm today.

Marshall leaves fond memories to be cherished by his sons, 5 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and  two Sisters-In-Law.  He is also affectionately remembered by all of his nieces and nephews; special friends-the  Deacons of St. Stephens Baptist Church,   and a host of relatives and friends.
