Geraldine Lytle

August 23, 1926 — December 30, 2018

North Austin Location

Geraldine “Jerry” Lytle was born in Enid, OK on August 23rd, 1926 to Luther H. and Effie M. Starr. She left for her Heavenly home on December 30, 2018. As a child, she lived in Oklahoma City and was active in Capitol Hill Baptist Church.  She graduated with honors from Capitol Hill High School and was active in choir musicals and violin/orchestra.

Jerry pursued her higher education at Oklahoma Baptist University preparing for a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at OBU she met Marvin Lytle.  They were married on May 24th, 1945.  Jerry put her education and career on hold to work with Marvin founding, building, and pastoring eight churches (in Oklahoma, California, Alaska, Texas and Belmopan, Belize).  While raising seven children, she finished her degree at Tyler Jr. College.

She started the Smith County Literacy Council in Tyler, Texas to teach adults to read and write.  When their youngest son started school, Jerry returned to school and received her degree as a registered nurse in 1967.  She worked at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas as well as doing home health care around the city.

In 1972, Jerry and her two youngest boys took a trip to Belize, Central America to visit missionary friends.  She saw a need for both Spiritual and physical health care and moved to Belize.  She worked for the government as a nurse and later trained in Midwifery (helping to bring many children into the world--including one of her own granddaughters).  She started a small church in her home and was later joined by Marvin and another of their sons.

She and Marvin Pastored The Church of the Good Shepherd there until returning to Texas in 1983.  Because of her love for writing and publishing, in September 1993 she completed a two-year program from the Christian Writers Institute.  Jerry continued to give of herself to bring joy into the lives of those around her even while living in Elgin Rehab and Nursing facility for nearly 6 years.

She was proceeded in death by Marvin in 2004.  She is survived by her children: Samuel Lytle, Daniel Lytle, Marva Huckabee, Timothy Lytle, Stephen Lytle, Jon Lytle, Jonathan David Lytle, their spouses, 18 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.  She “never met a stranger”, always found good in everyone, and was a “faithful servant” to her Lord and Savior for a lifetime.
