Charles Ekwurzel Sr.

May 10, 1941 — March 6, 2019

North Austin Location

Charles Oliver Ekwurzel, 77, passed peacefully in the comfort of his home on March 6th, 2019. Born in Lake City, Florida, on May 10th, 1941, Charlie, as he was known by friends and family, was born to Otto and Elizabeth Ekwurzel. He was brother to Frances Morris and Judy Felder.

Charlie spent his childhood in Paducah, Kentucky, living with his maternal grandparents and was known as Charlie Sinclair in grade school.  He later moved to Atlanta to attend the Georgia Military Academy and graduated from Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida. He continued his education with a focus in business and economics from New York University in New York City. He worked for the stock brokerage, Goodbody and Company and then managed Thompson McKinnon Brokerage Firm.  Before starting First Park Equities he helped author sections of the Florida security laws. He was the president of First Park Equities in Winter Park, Florida.

In 1983, he met his wife of 35 years, Lynn Kelly Ekwurzel. Blending their families together, they raised five children, Karen, Charles Jr., Amy, Jarrod and Dennis, and later moved to Texas. In Plano, Charlie partnered with his brother-in-law, Walker Morris, to run and operate Intelligence Technology Corporation (ITC). After ITC, Charlie opened another business, this time partnering with his wife to run Customers Health Plans, an insurance and financial planning firm.

After retirement, Charlie was active as a volunteer reader for Austin ISD elementary schools. Additionally, Charlie enjoyed fishing, reading, watching Fox Business Channel and Fox News (24/7!) and attending his grandchildren’s sports and academic endeavors. At first glance Charlie appeared to be a quiet soul, yet he held talent of a great storyteller often sharing memories of his upbringing and love of historic events and how they play true to current times.

Charlie was pre-deceased by his daughter, Amy Daughtry. He is survived by his wife Kelly Ekwurzel, his children Karen Lynch and her husband, Dan Lynch, Charles ‘Chuck’ Jr., Jarrod Ekwurzel and his wife Erica, and Dennis Kubes and grandchildren, Jack Lynch, Keeghan Daugherty, Tim Ullrich, Annie Ullrich Northcutt, Katie Ullrich, Mikaela Kubes-Pewitt, and Alexis and Elijah Ekwurzel, and beloved nieces and nephews.

Charlie’s presence will be greatly missed as he was a patient and compassionate gentleman always open to offering supportive advice.
